Project Statement:
“Mi Casa Es Tu Casa” welcomes refugees, immigrants, other newcomers and locals alike to new tastes, since the diaspora space is a site where the native is as much a “diasporian” as the “diasporian” is native.
Food connects us. Food is both a symbol of home and a symbol of something foreign. Food gives us a sense of community, and over time, these communities shape our cities, where everyone becomes the very essence of the fabric of the city.
With the arrivals of newcomers, any local cuisine is injected with a healthy dose of new flavors, curiosity and cultural understandings, and sweetening this meeting with food is what makes us human and keeps us all alive.
How we perceive food is also how we perceive culture. By introducing ‘the exotic’ to each other, the flavours and traditions that we attach to home, newcomers and locals alike, get to taste and smell the respective local cuisine and community of one another.
Artist Bio:
Marianne MarpLondon is a photographer, art director and artist. She is a polymath by nature, driven by research-led commissioned and self-initiated projects. Her work focuses on portraiture, the space between fact and fiction, and social commentary. Her lens seeks to explore the paradoxes of life to get a glimpse of the essence of the human condition.
In 2011, she was asked to shoot a portrait, which began her career as a photographer (later also as an artist), after having worked in design, music and fashion for years.
Her work has been exhibited and published internationally, including Tate Modern and TedxEastEnd in London, Arte Institute, Foundation for Contemporary Art and Gallery See Exhibition Space in New York, The Guardian, The New York Times Style Magazine – T Qatar, Lensculture and Snapped Photography Magazine.
Marianne MarpLondon had her first solo show in Dallas, Texas at tAd Gallery with the series, “She Loves You, Yeah Yeah Yeah,” and was a finalist in Lensculture Exposure Awards 2018, which is shown at Photo London at Somerset House in London.
She holds a first class BA(Hons) in Contemporary Media Studies from University of Westminster in London. She divides her time between London and Copenhagen.
