Project Statement:
Bodybuilding is an intense style of training used to develop a physique that can be shown in competitive exhibition. These images examine and celebrate the individuals who make up the Central and North Texas community of bodybuilders. This project documents the process of bodybuilding and explores the individuals’ motivations for this extreme style of training. I offer the public an inside look at what these men and women go through to prepare for a competition date. As a photographer I am interested in showing the process, but also moving them away from an objectifying light that the competitions are often associated with. This way my viewer has a better sense of the individuality of each person not just the final result of what their body looks like.
Artist Bio:
Matthew DeFeo (b. 1993) is a freelance photographer based in Denver, Colorado.
He received his BA in Photo-communications from St. Edwards University (2015) in Austin, Texas.
