What exactly is The FENCE?
The FENCE is a series of large-scale photography exhibitions printed on vinyl mesh and installed outdoors in 7 cities: Boston, Brooklyn, Atlanta, Houston, Santa Fe, Durham and Denver. Each exhibition is on public view for a minimum of 3 months in areas with massive pedestrian traffic, ensuring an unprecedented audience for your work.
Do I have to submit for each city separately?
No. All submissions are automatically considered for all exhibitions, across all participating cities, at no additional cost!
Is this competition open to photographers worldwide?
The FENCE is open to all photographers around the world, except where prohibited by law. Photographers must be 18 years of age or older at the time of submission.
What types of images can I submit?
All types of photographic work — from fine art to photojournalism — are accepted and encouraged.
What size and format should my digital images be?
Digital images should be JPEG files saved with max quality compression with a long dimension of at least 1,400 pixels at 72 dpi with either Adobe1998, or sRGB color space. Black and White images can also be submitted in Greyscale color space. We suggest uploading images that are less than 2 megabytes.
If selected, you will be asked to submit high resolution image files for printing, measuring at least 3,200 pixels in height – either as JPEG or TIFF files.
What are the Regional Artist Showcase FENCE exhibitions – and how are they different than The FENCE?
In addition to the 7 national FENCE exhibitions, we are excited to offer 4 additional opportunities for photographers from the following regions:
- Artists who live or work in Maine, Massachusetts, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island, or Connecticut, will be automatically considered for a special presentation as part of the Flashpoint Festival.

No. We will cover the full cost of production, installation, and maintenance of all FENCE exhibitions.
What is a photo series?
A photo series is comprised of three to five images that share a thematic connection or tell a story.
Can I enter single images if they fit the theme?
Unfortunately, no. At this time, we are only accepting submission of photo series.
Is there a limit to the number of series that I can enter?
No. You may enter the competition as many times as you like.
Can I enter the same series in more than one category?
Yes. If the series fits thematically in more than one category, you may submit it for consideration in additional categories.
Can I enter multiple series into one category?
Yes, you may enter multiple series into the same category and each will be considered independently of each other.
What is the role of The FENCE partners?
The FENCE is supported – in kind – by a number of organizations that believe in the power and importance of public art exhibits. Sponsors of The FENCE provide material support in the form of prizes and publicity for participating photographers.
Are there any restriction to the types of images I can submit?
When preparing your submission, please keep in mind that The FENCE is an outdoor exhibition that is open to visitors of all ages. Certain images containing scenes of a graphic nature (such as explicit nudity, sexual acts, or violence) may not be appropriate for our younger audience members. Please use your best judgement when submitting work for consideration.
Are there restrictions on submitting older work?
No. Photographers are welcome to submit work from any era in their career, as long as the series fits one or more of the submission categories.
Do I need a model release to submit my photographs to The FENCE?
Most likely not. However, there are a number of questions to consider when deciding whether a model release is necessary, including the specific circumstances the image was captured, and what country it was taken in. To learn more about model release requirements, please visit this helpful ASMP Tutorial page.
